Matta Fair with Travel Insurance

Matta Fair packages to come with insurance this year

KUALA LUMPUR: Those still feel insecure about buying travel packages from the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agencies (Matta) Fair, following recent events that left some travellers in the lurch, have been assured that there will be no glitches of any kind in the coming fair.

“What we want is consumer and public confidence” – NGIAM FOON

Matta president Ngiam Foon said: “What we want is consumer and public confidence. So in the coming fair, we have included a number of new features to enhance the quality of the fair, amongst them, the Matta Medi Evac Insurance scheme.”

He said that protection for travellers had become an urgent concern following the recent collapse of tour company Excellence Holiday Sdn Bhd which caused scores of travellers to lose money they had paid in advance for tour packages.

Ngiam added that the Medi Evac scheme, underwritten by Kurnia Insurance and RHB Insurance, was a very attractive package.

Medi Evac is a cashless insurance scheme that provides medical and hospitalisation coverage, as well as coverage for insolvency and absconding.

“What ‘cashless’ means is that if a traveller falls sick during a trip overseas and needs the attention of a doctor, he does not need to carry cash with him to seek treatment.

“All he needs to do is make a phone call and the insurance company will handle the rest. It is that simple,” said Ngiam at a news conference here yesterday.

Medi Evac provides medical and hospitalisation coverage of up to RM100,000, emergency medical evacuation/repatriation of up to RM100,000, accidental death or permanent disablement during travel of up to RM100,000, and compassionate visitation benefit of up to RM20,000, which pays for additional costs incurred for accommodation and flying two relatives or friends to the place of hospitalisation or death overseas.

The Government now requires all travel agents to sell an insurance package to consumers.

The Medi Evac scheme costs only RM7.50 for a minimum of three days’ coverage, and RM2.50 a day for each additional day.

“For that little money, you get coverage of up to RM320,000,” he said.

He added that the scheme also provided for reimbursement of deposits or full payment of air tickets or tour packages of up to RM5,000 for each insured person.

“So if a travel agent goes bust, you will get your refund,” he said.

The Matta Fair will be held at Halls 1,2 and 3 of Putra World Trade Centre here from Sept 7 to 9.

Entrance fee is RM3 per entry for adults and free for children under 12.
