Matta visitors to be offered new insurance scheme

KUALA LUMPUR: Visitors to the Malaysian Association of Travel and Tour Agents (Matta) travel fair next month will be offered insurance to protect them against possible abscondment or insolvency of travel agents from whom they purchase tickets.

Matta fair organising deputy chairman Joseph Xavier said all exhibitors had been told to inform visitors about their Medi Evac insurance scheme although it was up to the travellers to purchase them.

With the insurance, travellers would be insured up to RM5,000 for reimbursements or full payment of air tickets or tour packages should the travel agent go bust.

Matta officials said discussions were ongoing to increase the sum to RM10,000 but added that 90% of tour packages were below RM5,000.

Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai urged all travellers to get any insurance protection to ensure that the debacle involving tour agent Excellence Holidays Sdn Bhd did not reoccur.

“We are very concern about such incidents and do not want it to happen again,” Lim said at a press conference here Thursday. The company went bust suddenly causing customers to lose money paid in advance for tour packages to locations like Europe, China and Hong Kong. The directors are still on the run.

Xavier said they were discussing on good-will packages for those affected.

Underwritten by Kurnia Insurance Malaysia Bhd and RHB Insurance Bhd, the Matta Medi Evac premium was set at RM7.50 per the first three days and RM2.50 for each subsequent day. It would also cover medical treatment, repatriation of mortal remains and injuries.

The fair would be held at Putra World Trade Centre from Sept 7 until Sept 9 with an RM3 entrance fee for adults and free for children under 12.

There would be over 850 booths including from 16 countries which is expected to attract 80,000 visitors and some RM85mil in sales.
