Azalina: Budget will boost sporting culture in country

KUALA LUMPUR: The RM217mil allocation for sports development in the 2008 Budget will see a positive growth in sports programmes, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said yesterday.

She said the allocation would lead to development of sports facilities in all states at all levels and help inculcate a sporting culture among the people.

The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), in welcoming the government’s initiative, said it would help create awareness among the public and encourage more people to take up sporting activities.

Many parties also lauded Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s announcement of a RM300 tax exemption for buying sporting goods.

“Though the amount might not be very significant, the gesture in itself is a very good move to encourage a healthy lifestyle among the public,” said OCM secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi.

Kok Chi said the RM217mil to organise sporting activities, upgrading and building facilities for community sports was another welcome news for the people.

“Such an initiative shows the government is concerned in encouraging the public to take up sports and stay healthy,” he said.

National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Zolkples Embong said the government’s continuous support to develop sports augured well for the vision of a nation trying to excel in sports.

“We in the NSC have always strived to develop sports at the highest level and the continuous support from the government in terms of fund allocation will further help the cause,” he said.

Meanwhile, Universal Fitness and Leisure managing director Datuk Radha Krishnan said apart from building a healthy community, the initiative would also be an added boost to the growth of the sports-related industry.

“More people buying sporting goods will equate to more business for the industry.

“This will also fulfil the government’s wish to see more people getting involved in sporting activities,” he said.

“Since the awareness level among the public is still comparatively low when it comes to exercising, such an initiative is very timely,” said Radha, whose company deals with all kinds of equipment for fitness and leisure. – Bernama
