Budget 2008 : Better deal for special education teachers

Better deal for special education teachers

SPECIAL education teachers have reason to cheer.

The Government will increase their allowance from RM100 to RM250 per month next year.

“The increase is fabulous as we have been calling for it for a long time,” said Jinny Chen Siew Chin, a special educator at SK Sri Kelana primary school.

“This move will encourage new teachers to apply for positions.”

The principal of SMK Sekolah Pendidikan Khas Setapak (B), Che Fatimah Che Abdullah, said: “I’m very happy with the increase as it is only fair to my teachers who are very dedicated.”

National Union of the Teaching Profession secretary-general Lok Yim Pheng said the increase was timely.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed lauded the increase in allowances.

The extra encouragement for educators would help improve the quality of students, he said.

“Better students in school will mean better students in university.”

On the allowance of RM60 per hour for degree holders and RM50 per hour for diploma holders teaching Chinese and Tamil languages in national schools, Education director-general Datuk Alimuddin Mohd Dom said this was for contract teachers taught the two languages after school hours or on Saturdays.

The proposal to teach Chinese and Tamil in national schools was made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to attract more non-bumiputras to national schools.
