Since its launch on Aug 15, there have been 14,000 bookings for the four-door saloon.

This exceeds bookings for any other Proton model within a one-month period.

Proton Holdings Berhad managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir yesterday said after launching the Proton I.CARE Mobile team.

“So far, in terms of response, it has beaten all the other models.
“The figure of 14,000 is a lot. Of course, our RM29,000 Saga model also had high sales.”

Earlier this year, the repackaged Saga, which sold for RM26,999, received 10,000 bookings in less than a month.

An I.CARE team based at a Petronas station here provided free inspections and service to Proton car owners in the area.

Syed Zainal said the teams had visited at least 32 locations and conducted free inspections and provided service for more than 1,500 cars.

The teams were created by Proton as a way to dispel the negative perception some buyers had about the company.

“Before, there were many complaints about the service and quality.

“We are trying to convince the public that we are willing to make a difference.”

Syed Zainal said the I.CARE quality initiative was also incorporated in new models, such as the Persona.

The Persona, which replaced the 14-year old Wira line, has been touted as the model that will change Proton’s fortunes.

The car competes with Perodua Myvi and Viva, Toyota Vios and Honda City in the sub-B and B segments category and is priced between RM44,999 and RM55,800.

Proton, once the market leader in the local automotive market, controlled about 60 per cent of the market share in 2002.

However, its share of the market has decreased over the past few years.

Last year, Perodua, the second national car maker, sold more cars than Proton for the first time.

Currently, Proton’s share of the market is 23 per cent.
