How Many Types of Dates are There ?
I attended an iftar (breaking fast event) a few days ago and was served with 4 different types of dates (known as tamar / tamoor or kurma in Malaysia).
With Ramadhan just crossing the midway mark as of yesterday, I wonder how many types of dates there really are worldwide as even in Malaysia, when it comes to the month of Ramadhan, there are a variety of dates available on sale. According to wiki.answers (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_types_of_dates_are_there) there are 20 known types of dates available in 5 forms.
There is a dates market located in Madinah (Medina) in Saudi Arabia. The last time I was there was in 2000. The have a vast selection, mostly locally grown as the dessert climate is conducive for its growth (http://www.madinah-madinah.com/brands/Madinah-Dates-Market.html). You can have them ship the dates directly to your doorstep.
I found this web for Al Madinah Al Munawarah Dates Co. (http://www.tomoor.com/) with many interesting pics and varieties. There is also the website for The Madinah Date Factory (http://www.madinahdatefactory.com/dates/). Statistics from Wikipedia shows that the largest producer of dates worldwide is Egypt, followed by Iran respectively (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_producing_countries_of_agricultural_commodities).
